  • You live in San Diego and you have experienced homelessness, unstable housing, or adverse living situations at any point during high school (9th-12th grade)

  • You are looking to attend a college, university, certificate program, apprenticeship program, or technical skills training this coming semester

  • You are eager and ready to take steps to enhance your skills and further your education

  • You are interested in building a bright future for yourself, your family, and your community

How to Apply

Applying for the New Beginnings Scholarship Fund for Unhoused Youth is as simple as 1, 2, 3.

This scholarship is available through the San Diego Foundation (SDF) Common Scholarship Application. Instructions are below.

1.  Complete the FAFSA

Filing a complete FAFSA or California Dream Act application is a required first step for all students appying for San Diego Foundation Scholarships.

It should take between 1-2 hours to complete.

2. Attend an Application Workshop

View our events calendar for information about upcoming workshops!

These workshops are not mandatory, but are designed to walk you through the application process and answer any questions you may have about the Common Application or FAFSA process.

They are completely free… find one that works for your and join us!

3.  Complete the SDF Common Scholarship Application

The San Diego Foundation Common Application opens on Wednesday, January 15th and closes at 2pm, on Wednesday, March 5th.

Make sure you select “currently unhoused or have previously been unhoused during high school (9th-12th). This is what will match you with the NBSF scholarship!

If you’re awarded a New Beginnings Scholarship, you are automatically eligible to be enrolled in our New Beginnings Scholars Program! This means you will have access to ongoing support from our staff, access to our alumni community, and partnership with an ongoing friend and advocate.
